What do they need?
The needs of the homeless are very specific. Here are a few items that will be very important for us to be able to give out in the next 6-9 months.
We Always Need:
- socks. everyone needs new socks
- underwear. most of the people we serve are men. I suggest 34, 36, 40 inch sizes. probably mostly 34. both the socks and the underwear can be inexpensively bought at sams.
- shoes/work boots : sizes 9-14
- blue jeans. mostly 34in waist but some larger and some smaller. a pair only cost $12 at sams
- hygiene kits. typically, these contain hotel or sample sizes of
- shampoo
- toothpaste/toothbrush
- disposable razors
- lotion
- some sort of spf sun protection
- soap
- insect repellent
It’s a great help if people can build entire kits and put them in baggies. It makes distributing them so much easier. A small group at another church once found a supplier to hotels located in Irving. This company sold all these items to the small group at half-price when she learned what they were for, then the small group spent an evening assembling over 100 of them!
Winter Specific:
- Blankets
- Coats
- Warm Hats
- Insulated underwear
- Gloves/Hats
Summer Specific:
- t-shirts. these are the standard working attire in the summer. xl and xxl
- work gloves
