Bring a coat, blanket or make a donation to help the cause.

Come spend an informal hour touring our new facility and listen to us share “who” we are, “what” we do and “how” you can help! We are offering this time twice a month to fit your busy schedule.

These events are specifically designed for our donors, volunteers or those who want more information about our ministry. We will share with you our vision, our mission and our needs while answering your questions.

Everyday you wake up and have choices to make. You can choose what you wear, what you eat, or what route you take to work. You can chose to be a positive, productive person or you can choose to be destructive. The homeless make that same decision as well, and we know some that choose to be productive.

Diana woke up this morning at the local homeless shelter, rolled up her mat, stood in line for a shower, and waited in line for breakfast with hundreds of others. Then she made the choice not to go get high and forget the hurts that bind her; she decided to come serve with us.

Diana, along with several others, come into the OurCalling building during the week and clean floors, sort donations, fold clothes, and sit and pray with others. These tasks need to be done, but cannot get done by staff alone. We have started a program where the homeless community can come serve along side us while earning the opportunity to use the shower and laundry room.

OurCalling has been blessed with a building that contains a shower facility and a washer and dryer. It is our honor to share these with our brothers and sisters. They make a choice spend their time serving with us and we get the privilege to share these blessings with them.

• To use the shower – one must volunteer to help with one building chore.
• To use the washer/dryer – one must volunteer to help wash, fold, sort other donated clothes.
• To get a locker – one must volunteer 12 hours per week.

We have been given permission to use the parking lot at the corner of Corsicana and Cadiz. The Church is directly beside the old resource center. We have many details to arrange and would appreciate your prayer and help. We plan on serving popcorn and drinks during the film. Afterwards we will have an invitation for people to publicly trust Christ followed by a communion service.

We need approximately 50 volunteers for this event. Our needs include AV, snacks, communion, and volunteers to pray with people. Please ask God how He can use you to help share the love of Christ with people.

Volunteers should arrive at 6:30, the movie will begin at 7:15.

• Children: Help pack toys, set up Friday before the event, Help man areas such as bounce houses, gifts, art, family pictures, ponies/petting zoo, etc. After the event, help box and clean up.
• Homeless Gifts: GIFT DRIVES – organize drives around the city, help with the packing of gifts, connect with stores/ organizations for donations of shoes, coats, toys, personal care products,
• Evangelism/Prayer: Share with the homeless the only Hope we have who is also the greatest Gift of all – Jesus! PRAY for them individually before and during the event. Connect our homeless and needy friends to churches around who would continue to disciple them to become a productive member of our community. Would love to have more Hispanic members, a great need!! Prayer is where the Power is!
• Medical / Dental / Vision : Medical Professionals, contribute your time and expertise to help ease the pain of homeless and needy families.
• Footwashing and Homeless Shoes: An act of servitude will be demonstrated at the Foot washing area where the homeless will be treated like royalty! Provide new shoes to homeless adults.
• Entertainment: Provide a worshipful atmosphere where God is magnified by having some selected musicians and  groups that would provide music and entertainment. Will connect with churches and other Christian groups who could share their talents. (Please contact the Committee Chair.)
• Inside Ministries: (Please contact the Committee Chair.)
  • Hair Cut – Hairstylists and Barbers to provide our homeless friends with a new outlook.
  • Makeover - For Makeover Professionals. Provide a make over area to our homeless friends with haircuts, make up and manicures to aid in their physical well being.
  • Family Counseling – provide professional assistance to meet the mental, emotional, psychological and legal needs to our guests. Assessment will be made and direct them to the local and available resources in the community for further counseling.  Contact other Christian Counseling agencies to be a part of this service.
  • Food - Conducts Food drives at their church/org. Collects the Food donated, Help serve and clean up at the Food area.
• Facility (Decorations, Security/Guest Assistance, Transportation): Help set up and decorate the facilities to be cheerful and welcoming for the homeless. Provide Guest Assistance services to the guests, and supplement the security personnel. Assist with logistics of goods, loading/unloading and set up.
• Volunteers: Sign in all volunteers. Connect volunteers to different committees.

What do you need to do?

• Clean your blanket or coat.

• Pray for the person who will receive your gift. Pray that the love of God would speak to them.
• Tell your friends to help!

How long can we listen to the cries of the people without responding?

Jesus told a story of a shepherd with a lost sheep:

Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? Luke 15:4

If we wait for the “lost” to come to us, it shows that we are not a “good” shepherd. Jesus modeled the relentless pursuit of the lost when He came here to save us. So should we not do the same?

We go behind the liquor stores, in remote wooded areas, to the drug infested neighborhoods and sometimes to the crack houses. God loves us so much that He sent His Son. He loves the homeless so much that He continues to send us to pursue them for the sake of the Gospel.

Can you look into these faces and tell them that they aren’t worth pursuing?

We want to be where they are, serving where they live. Will you join us?

They have crazy rules that sometimes change daily. They treat you like children telling you when to go to sleep and when to wake up. Shelters herd us like animals which makes us feel less than human…
People are homeless because of deep problems. Some have drug or alcohol problems, but others have social problems or problems that started at childhood. Out here, no one tells you what to do.

His choice to live at a remote camp also comes with challenges. Where do you get food? What about health and safety concerns? There are extreme challenges that accompany the freedom of the streets.

But why would anyone choose to live out there? That’s as difficult as why someone would live in a neighborhood that they can’t afford in order to impress people they don’t like. People live – where they live. Sometimes it’s by choice and sometimes it’s because there are no other options. Where should the thousands of homeless people on the streets go? The shelters are full, many are unemployable and most don’t have the stability to maintain a “free” apartment.

Then we are slapped in the face with a difficult question : What would Jesus do? Or better, what did He do? He went out to the masses and introduced them to the God who rescues. He pointed people to a relationship with God and united people into a community of faith who would come beside and help those in need. He fed the hungry and met tangible needs of the community to whom He ministered. Under His example, the early church served the poor, the widows and orphans. The Apostle Paul raised money for the poor in Jerusalem. And today, men and women unite to be the church to those in need.

My friend in the picture did live in that shack. But recently, utility workers tore his home apart, cleared the brush and disposed of all of the “trash”. He has found a new campsite and we continue to visit him and the dozens of people in the same situation at that location. There are hundreds of similar campsites around Dallas. We can’t meet all of their needs, but with a meal and a warm handshake, we can begin a conversation that will change his eternity. Will you join us?
